Free Museums to Spend an Afternoon in Paris

Paris is a city bursting at the seams with history, art and beauty. There are dozens of museum options for all kinds of tastes and wonders. Here's a few to put on your list next time you visit Paris.


Before you start you should know:


For students and EU residents under 26 have free access to all the national museums and monuments in France.


On the first Saturday night of each month, the Louvre offers free entry to everyone between 6:00 pm and 9:45 pm.

Pro Tip: The crowds tend to be quieter in the evenings!

PETIT PALAIS MUSEE DES BEAUX-ARTS

A visit for the architecture alone is worth it! A stunning museum filled with fine art pieces including pieces from Monet, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and many more. Classical pieces up until 1900's are on display for your viewing pleasure. Open Tuesdays-Sundays 10:00AM-6:00PM, last admission at 4:45PM. Museums Website.




MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

Another stunning building, this museum is hard to miss and another must see. The inside holds modern and contemporary art pieces, sculptures, designs and objects from the likes of names such as Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol amongst many others. Needing a break? Head to the terrace for a cafe au lait and panoramic views of Paris. Open Tuesdays-Sundays 10:00AM-6:00PM, Thursdays open until 10:00PM. Museums Website.



THE MUSÉE CARNAVALET

I know I probably sound like a broken record, but the architecture!!! Comprised of two mansions this former home turned museum offers an extensive history of Paris. Ever evolving, the collection of sculptures, paintings, medals, posters etc., are a beautiful reminder of the origins of The City of Lights. Open Tuesday-Sunday 10:00AM-6:00PM. Museums Website.



MAISON DE VICTOR HUGO

The famous authors home is open and free to the public. Take a close look at what his home looks like while he wrote The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Les Misérables. Open Tuesday-Sunday 10:00AM-6:00PM. Museums Website.



MUSEE DE LA VIE ROMANTIQUE

Go ahead and sigh. Ahhhhh, the Museum of the Romantic Life in Paris. Sounds lovely, right? Set in a quaint French home belonging to the late artist Ary Scheffer, this museum holds many romantic pieces and a gorgeous garden/greenhouse to enjoy the Rose Bakery Tea Room afterwards. It's a dreamy setting for a perfect Parisian afternoon. Open Tuesday-Sunday 10:00AM-6:00PM. Museums Website.
