Day 17 - Beaune
Clear skies and chirping birds called us out of bed this morning. We have an espresso machine in our room so I've been making at least one a day. That is my morning ritual here, make and espresso, open the window and take in the quiet town of Beaune, occasionally dipping a cookie into my mug. Just so you know, it is 100% acceptable to have chocolate first thing in the morning in France - I am 8% French so I am embracing my culture from here on out no matter where I am. Also, I am buying an espresso machine when we get back home.
After our melodious start to the day, the birds singing, the espresso machine whispering, the quiet rumble of the occasional car slowly making its way down the cobblestone street, we decided to check out the ramparts. The easy loop took us through town and to several locations where the ramparts sit. Each one offering a beautiful view, and gorgeous stone structures.
After our self guided tour we decided to have a picnic. Luckily a café in the town square was open, so we grabbed a few things for our picnic. We made friends with the young man working, Allan (with TWO L's!) and he told us of his dream to live in California one day. I think he would fit right in.
We found a sunny spot along a river where we ate our sandwiches and cookies. We fed the ducks nearby and agreed the water was unbelievably clear. After filling up, I wanted to take a nice walk so we strolled down this promenade and found ourselves in this beautiful park!

A gorgeous pond held court to ducks and geese. We stumbled upon a pigeon sanctuary and laughed at the one that looked like it had bell bottoms on. We followed the winding path next to the pond and the tiny rivers running into it, trapsed over bridges, and found ourselves overlooking a huge vineyard. Rolling green hills of harvested vines as far as the eye could see.
Back through the park, we passed a fish tank with giant goldfish, flower gardens, a carousel straight of our Mary Poppins and a small farm with alpacas, bunnies, sheep and chickens. It was the most lovely afternoon, full of surprises.
Later on, we pulled up to a pub and ordered Beef Bourguignonne and beer and watched vintage cars roll by. We really got to see the beautiful town today, and I am so grateful for the peace, nature and pace Beaune has given us during our stay.
Happy Travels my friends!
